Wild Life Fun in San Francisco

The Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco is a great place to wander, no matter what your age! More than 20,000 marine animals, from friendly bat rays and leopard sharks to jellyfish and brown sea nettles, can be viewed at this fantastic tunneled attraction. Naturalists can answer your questions as you discover the underwater wonders that exist in the San Francisco Bay. Touch the Bay, an interactive exhibit, allows you to handle these marine animals and touch some land animals found locally, as well.

The Aquarium of the Bay is open daily, except Christmas, from 9am-8pm in the summer and 10am-6pm in the winter. Tickets are $16.95 for adults and $8.00 for children and seniors, although family passes are available for only $39.95 (includes 2 adults & 2 children). Discounts are available with your Bay Area transfer or public transportation pass, too. If you prefer to drive, there is a parking garage across from the aquarium. The Aquarium of the Bay is located next to Pier 39. Before you visit, watch the sea lions that frolic near Pier 39, they make for fun, free San Franciscan entertainment!

San Francisco Flocks to Stern Grove

Each summer since 1938, the Stern Grove Festival Association has provided admission-free performing arts to San Francisco residents. Located in the gorgeous open air amphitheater at Sloat Boulevard and 19th Avenue, the Sigmund Stern Grove offers the best in performing arts. The grove provides opportunity for music and nature lovers to gather together and picnic amidst the trees.

Concerts begin at 2 p.m., but you should arrive early to find seating. Pre-concert explanations and conversation, called “Troc Talks” occur at noon prior to many of the concerts at the Grove’s Trocadero Clubhouse. Children are invited to explore with hands-on activities through KidStage, located in the West Meadow from 12-1 p.m. before the concerts.

Home Owner Rebates in San Francisco

Have you wanted to upgrade your San Francisco home to be more energy efficient but worried about the cost? You’re in luck! Tax credits on eco-friendly home improvements have been extended.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has been extended through December 31, 2010. That means that federal tax credits of about 30% are available to San Franciscan residents who are interested in upgrading the energy efficiency of their homes.

Water heaters, windows, heating and air conditioning units, biomass stoves, and certain insulation and roofing material upgrades all fall under the 25C tax credit. Keep in mind that these credits are only beneficial for your primary existing residence. Rental properties do not qualify.

The 25D tax credit allows for modifications involving solar panels, wind power, and geothermal heat pump systems until December 2016. This credit can be used on second homes and new homes, although not on rentals. Ask your tax professional if your home can qualify. More rebates for San Francisco residents can be found here.

Yerba Buena Gardens, located at Fourth and Mission Streets in San Francisco, is known as the city’s “crown jewel.” Featuring the Esplanade, a five and a half acre expanse of grassy meadows, trees and water features, the Esplanade provides a welcome outdoor area in San Francisco’s downtown for relaxation and reflection. The upper terrace boasts the Sister City Gardens, where flowers bloom from thirteen other regions from around the world. The Ohlone Indian Memorial and Cho-En Butterfly Garden are other quiet areas of the Esplanade, allowing visitors a bit of serenity.

Many locals also enjoy the free concerts that are held daily at noon at the Yerba Buena Gardens throughout the summer. Historically speaking, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, a fifty foot fountain and waterfall streaming 120,000 gallons of recirculating water over granite pictures and inspiring quotes relating to the civil rights movement, can be found here as well.

Located in Fisherman’s Wharf at Pier 39, on the second floor, near the Italian carousel, Magowan’s Infinite Mirror Maze is a journey into the unique, quirky nature that defines San Francisco. A genuine maze of over 3,000 mirrored square feet will definitely keep you entertained. This truly amazing attraction will have children, teens and adults alike laughing out loud as they try to navigate themselves from start to finish.

Flickering lights, music, and occasionally fog enhance the experience. Bring a camera or video camera and you’ll have some unbelievable recorded memories. Expect to spend between ten to thirty minutes lost in the mirrored maze. Once you’ve made your way through, you can go back over and over again, as return trips are included in $5 cost. You can even try it backwards! You will be asked to wear gloves in case you touch the mirrors.
